2008-W Burnished Silver Eagle Reverse Of 2007 NGC MS70 John Mercanti Signed
Why is this coin so special?
The 2008-W Burnished Silver Eagle comes with two distinct different versions of the reverse. The normal 2008-W, is the newer style with a fancier "U" with a serif underneath the right of the "U". A limited number of coins were erroneously minted using the reverse of the 2007 Silver Eagle, which has an uneven "U" and without a serif underneath the right of the "U". The Reverse of 2007 is much scarcer than the normal issue. According to CoinWorld, there are approximately 47,000 coins bearing the reverse of 2007, based on information from the U.S. Mint who located 15 incorrect dies.
History of the American Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. The silver eagle was first released November 24, 1986. American Silver eagles are only struck in the one-troy ounce size, which has a face value of one dollar and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. The Silver American Eagle coins were minted at the San Francisco Mint from 1986-1992. From 1993-2000 the coins were minted in the Philadelphia Mint. In 2001 the Silver Eagle production moved to West Point where the minting is still done today. Adolph A. Weinman designed the obverse known as The Walking Liberty and John Mercanti designed the reverse called the Heraldic Eagle.
Who is John Mercanti?
John Mercanti was the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and designed the American Silver Eagle Reverse. The reverse design is John Mercanti’s rendition of the Heraldic Eagle with a shield grasping an olive branch with one talon and an arrow in the other. Above the eagle are thirteen stars that represent the original thirteen colonies. The eagle holds a banner with the motto ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ in its beak. ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ and ‘1 OZ FINE SILVER~ ONE DOLLAR’ are inscribed on this side along with John Mercanti’s initials. This reverse design was in production from 1986-2021. It is for this reason the NGC American Silver Eagles in perfect MS70 condition signed by John Mercanti are the most sought after and prized modern graded coins available in the market.
